Answers to questions about the bariatric surgery show

Following the bariatric surgery episode of Penn Vital Signs, viewers were encouraged to email their questions about procedure. Below are these questions and answers.

Margaret asks:
Sorry, I'm late with this question. I have an appointment on 7/21 with Dr. Williams. How soon after the initial consultation, if I'm approved for the surgery, will the surgery take place?

Kathryn L. Burg MSN, CRNP responds:
The surgery would take place approximately six to eight weeks after your initial consultation.

Cindy asks:
Do you have a group web site for people that had the surgery to go and talk and post photos?

Kathryn L. Burg MSN, CRNP responds:
We have a Yahoo! site where patients can talk. Here is the information:

Shannon asks:
I am 5'5" and weigh 210 pounds, age 20. Would I be considered for this surgery.

Kathryn L. Burg MSN, CRNP responds:
Your Body Mass Index (BMI) is 34.9. The criteria for surgery is a BMI of 40 or greater or a BMI of 35 with obesity-related medical conditions. If you have other health problems related to obesity, you would be a candidate for surgery.
