This episode of Penn Vital Signs will follow the story of two organ donor recipients. While one patient is diagnosed with a deadly kidney disease, the other patient learns that his Hepatitis C and liver cancer require a new liver in order for him to survive.

With transplant surgery comes the difficulty of waiting for a donor. Fortunately for one patient, a living donor is as close as his family. For this patient, a family member is not only willing to undergo surgery but is a perfect candidate to donate a kidney. For the other patient, his name will be placed on a transplant waiting list. It will be a difficult time as he waits for the telephone call which could save his life.

While the surgery is remarkable in itself, it is also revolutionary with the use of a computerized robotic system allowing for a quicker, less painful recovery.

Originally aired April 2004.
