transplant surgeons, psychiatrists, cardiologists,
nurse coordinators, social workers, financial
coordinators and discharge planners.

care during the pancreas transplant process:
The nephrologist is a medical doctor
who specializes in treating of kidney and pancreas
diseases. Penn's pancreas transplant nephrologists

The transplant coordinator is the primary
contact for the patient before and after transplant
surgery. The coordinator teaches the patient all
about the transplant process including the evaluation,
the waiting period,
the surgery, and
follow-up care.

The social worker provides counseling
for emotional support, problem-solving techniques,
and relaxation therapy for anxiety. The social
worker coordinates a support
group for pre- and post-transplant patients.
She can refer transplant patients to appropriate
community resources and assist with practical
concerns, such as temporary housing and financial
resources.

The financial coordinator assists patients
with questions and concerns related to health
insurance coverage and pancreas transplant costs.
The financial coordinator will also offer assistance
with obtaining, maintaining and/or changing insurance
plans, Medicare and state assistance. Penn's pancreas
transplant financial coordinator is Bernadette
Selera.
The discharge planner helps the transplant
patient get ready to leave the hospital following
surgery. This person can help with questions about
obtaining and taking medications after transplant.
