Candidates for Receiving a Liver from a Living Donor

Most patients who are evaluated and found to be acceptable candidates for liver transplantation can be considered for adult-to-adult living donor transplantation. However, each recipient has to be evaluated on a case-by-case basis.

Recipients who may not be candidates for receiving a partial liver may include those who:

  • are overweight
  • older age
  • have had prior abdominal surgery
  • have associated medical conditions that would require the patient to receive a whole liver rather than just a single lobe
  • are either too sick or too well to undergo living donor liver transplantation
