The Penn Transplant Center is the largest multi-organ
transplant center in the region as well as ranking
in the top 10 centers in the nation. Penn transplants
all solid organs and is a pioneer in islet cell
transplantation.
Some facts about the Penn Transplant Center:
- All transplant services are represented
in Philadelphia Magazine's "Top
Docs" issue.
- Our transplant teams annually perform 45%
more cadaveric transplants than any other center
in the region.
- Penn’s survival outcomes in all organ
transplants exceed the national average. Our
superior outcomes are a result of the combined
efforts of surgery and medicine found in a
unique multi-disciplinary approach to the treatment
of end stage organ disease.
- Penn annually performs more than 400 solid
organ transplants.
- We have successfully decreased length of
stay for patients in many of our transplant
programs.
- Medicare has approved the Hospital of the
University of Pennsylvania as a site for the
following transplants: heart, lung, liver,
kidney, kidney/pancreas and pancreas after
kidney.
- We are one of nine transplant programs in
the nation participating in the NIH sponsored
adult-to-adult living liver donor study.
- Penn has established a joint program with The
Children's Hospital of Philadelphia to
allow healthy adult relatives to donate organ
tissue to children with end-stage kidney,
liver or lung disease.
The Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania
is an approved member of the United
Network for Organ Sharing (UNOS). In addition,
we work in collaboration with the local organ
procurement organization, the Gift
of Life Donor Program.
HUP
Wins the 2006 Gift of Life Award |
HUP has won the 2006 Gift
of
Life Award from the Delaware
Valley Healthcare Council
(DVHC). According to the
DVHC, the Award was established
this year “to recognize a
hospital for excellence in family
care and outstanding rates of
performance in organ donation.
HUP's dedication to the cause
was most impressive and the
selection committee felt strongly
that they deserved to win the
2006 Gift of Life Award.”
HUP was responsible
for 38
organ donations from July 2005
to June 2006, the highest
number of organ donations in
the history of the Gift of Life
program. With a conversion
rate of 81 percent, HUP's performance
was unprecedented in
terms of the ability to convert
such a large number of potential
donors into actual donors. |
