Division Overview
The Division of Thoracic Surgery at Penn, consisting of six very experienced and highly
recognized thoracic surgeons, is one of the largest academic thoracic units in the country.
Our mission is to provide outstanding care of patients, train the thoracic surgeons of the
future, and conduct basic and clinical research towards the development of innovative methods
of treatment for diseases of the lungs, esophagus, chest wall, and mediastinum. We seek to
provide these services not only to our community, but to the country and the rest of the world.
Penn was one of the first institutions to appreciate the value of superspecialization in thoracic
surgery. Since the inception of the Section of General Thoracic Surgery in 1991, the Penn
practice has grown dramatically. It is now among the worldwide leaders in this field and its
surgeons are recognized nationally and internationally for their contributions. The success of
the thoracic surgical practice at Penn was recognized by the establishment of a formal
Division in 2005.

The volume of thoracic surgery at Penn makes us among the busiest
and most experienced thoracic surgeons in the world.

A close link has been identified in recent years
between volume and quality in complex surgery.
Surgeons performing more of these operations
clearly have better outcomes. Surgeons in the
Division of Thoracic Surgery at Penn perform
more than twice as many major chest procedures
as the next busiest group in the Philadelphia
region. This volume, in
fact, makes Penn thoracic surgeons among the busiest and most experienced in the world.
