Designing the Perelman Center
A central transparent public space and plaza
are the focal point for the Perelman Center for
Advanced Medicine. The atrium and the exterior
plaza are defining urban characteristics of the
new site and all future phases of development.
The solution for the Perelman Center unlocks
the remainder of the site and allows for the
expansion of the various departments in an incremental
approach as future demand develops.
The design solution is a five-level high structure
above Civic Center Boulevard, mediating the height
of the building to the adjacent tall structures
and creating an inviting plaza at ground level
that is protected from the environments.
The building is conceived as two interlocking “L”-shaped
buildings, forming a “U”, with the
geometrics established by 34th Street and the
Center City axis. One “L” houses
the Abramson Cancer Center with the other containing
cancer and cardiology services.
The glazed exterior maximizes the amount of
natural daylight entering the floors. Public
spaces, waiting areas, and appropriate clinical
spaces and offices are placed at the perimeter
of the plan so that they all benefit from natural
daylight and outward views.
The primary circulation routes are stacked vertically
through the building via two staff cores and
four public cores with clearly defined public
and staff/service elevators. A modular
approach for structure and building servicing
is taken to provide optimal spaces for today's
clinical requirements with enough flexibility
to accommodate future expansion and possible
future reconfiguration of departments.
At the roof of the atrium is a Conference Center
and administrative suite connected to the “U” building
by glass bridges.
