About Our Program

The Penn Pain Medicine program consists of 3 clinical services, the Penn Pain Medicine Center, the Anesthesia Pain Service (APS), and the palliative care service (SYMPAC).

Penn Pain Medicine Center
As one of the leading pain management medicine centers in the Philadelphia region, the Penn Pain Medicine Center is a resource for people with complex pain problems.

The Penn Pain Medicine Center provides outpatient care to patients who need care for their chronic pain or cancer-related pain. Therapy for chronic pain includes a variety of treatment methods, including medications, nerve blocks, advanced interventional methods, self-management techniques, and physical therapy.

Penn Pain Medicine Team

The Center provides comprehensive, interdisciplinary pain care using a team approach, in which the patient may be cared for by a pain physician, psychologist, nurse practitioner, physician assistant, and physical therapist.

Anesthesia Pain Service (APS)
The APS provides inpatient consultation pain services at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania (HUP) and Penn Presbyterian Medical Center (PPMC). While the main focus is the management of acute pain in patients who have undergone major surgery, this service also provides consultation services for a wide variety of painful conditions. This service cares for patients seven days a week.

Palliative Care Service (SYMPAC)
SYMPAC provides inpatient consultation services at HUP to patients who require palliative care. While most of the patient complaints are related to pain, symptoms such as fatigue, dyspnea and nausea are also addressed. SYMPAC cares for patients five days a week. Weekend coverage is through the APS.
