Geriatric Oncology
"Living Well: A Program for Older Adults with
Cancer" was
established in July 2004 as one of the first
geriatric oncology programs in Philadelphia.
This program was developed to respond to the
need for specialized services for the aging population.
This program uses a unique model of service that
encompasses nursing, social work and psychology
assessments to address the needs of geriatric
oncology patients and their caregivers.
Under
the direction of medical oncologist, David
Mintzer, MD, and program coordinator Dana Marcone, MSW,
LSW, this program was developed as a branch of
the established palliative care program. Oncology
patients over age 65 are evaluated with a brief
assessment tool upon diagnosis. Those who are
identified to have medical, social or psychological
needs are referred to the program.
Once enrolled
in the program, a more comprehensive assessment
is completed and referrals are made to appropriate
clinicians. Patients and caregivers are followed
through the course of their disease and needs
are re-evaluated on a regular basis.
The Joan Karnell Cancer Center remains deeply committed
to expanding programs such as this to ease the
burden and suffering associated with cancer.
