Navigating from Screening to Treatment
Cancer treatment methods have evolved and provide impetus for comprehensive
programs that focus on reducing the incidence, morbidity and mortality
of cancer. As a result, surgical
oncology nurse coordinators are part
of the multidisciplinary oncology team to achieve the best results
for cancer patients.
Surgical oncology nurse
coordinator, Susan Kruse plays a pivotal role in providing coordinated
care to cancer patients attending the Joan
Karnell Cancer Center. The nurse coordinators also provide education,
counseling for cancer prevention, screening and detection.
“Our role is to assist families by streamlining the investigations,
being a point of contact, educating them on what to expect in terms
of diagnosis and treatment, and being a liaison between the family,
the doctor and community,” Kruse said.
At Joan Karnell Cancer Center, a nurse coordinator is involved in
the cancer consultative and treatment phase. Nurse coordinators provide
information and support to the patient and family. The nurse coordinators
also help patients understand the information from the physician and
give support through complex decision-making.
