Maternal Fetal Medicine at HUP
Some high-risk complications occur during pregnancy.
In other cases, the mother may have a preexisting
condition (e.g. heart disease, diabetes) or may
have had a problem with a previous pregnancy.
In these situations, your obstetrician may recommend
that you begin your care with a high-risk obstetrician.
The Division of Maternal Fetal Medicine at the
Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania specializes
in the care and treatment of women whose pregnancies
are considered high-risk. Our practitioners can
provide complete obstetric care throughout your
pregnancy, delivery and postpartum period, or
they can work in consultation with your primary
care obstetrician. When treating medically complicated
pregnancies, our physicians coordinate the care
of patients with Penn specialists in hematology,
oncology, pulmonary, cardiology, gastroenterology
and many other specialized fields.
Our Staff
Our staff includes board-certified perinatologists
and nationally recognized experts in high-risk
obstetrics, fetal evaluation, antepartum testing.
Our staff has significant expertise in treating
women with a history of preterm births or pregnancy
losses. Our maternal fetal medicine specialists
work hand in hand with newborn specialists and
obstetrical anesthetists to give you and your
baby the best care possible.
Should you require time in the hospital before
delivery, our staff in the Perinatal
Evaluation Center will ensure your comfort
and care. In addition, The Children's Hospital
of Philadelphia, located next door to the Hospital
of the University of Pennsylvania, allows us to
work together with pediatric subspecialists and
pediatric surgical specialists during your pregnancy
and when the baby is born.
