Childbirth and Parent Education at Pennsylvania Hospital

Preparation for Childbirth

Expectant parents will learn the value of working as a team during the childbirth process. Class covers breathing and relaxation techniques, stages of labor, medication options, and cesarean birth. You will also tour the labor and delivery units, maternity floor and newborn nursery. One-day Saturday or Sunday class options are offered. Fee: $120/couple, includes parking.

Breastfeeding Class

The benefits and management of breastfeeding your baby will be discussed in this one-session class. You will learn how to avoid breastfeeding difficulties and gain the skills and confidence that will enable you to succeed. Family members are encouraged to attend to learn how to support your breastfeeding efforts. Fee: $35.

Baby Care Basics

This two-hour class is designed to help build your confidence as a new parent by learning safe and comfortable ways to care for, swaddle, diaper and bathe your baby. We will also discuss newborn appearance and characteristics. Fee: $35/couple.

Infant/Child Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR)

This three-hour CPR class is taught by registered nurses certified by the American Heart Association. Course focuses on rescue procedures for infants and children up to eight years of age. Instruction covers emergencies such as choking, respiratory arrest and cardiac arrest. Parents, grandparents, and child care providers are encouraged to attend. The CPR class is $40/per person.

Happiest Baby©

In Dr. Harvey Karp’s Happiest Baby Class© expectant and new parents will learn step-by-step how to help their baby sleep better and how to soothe even the fussiest baby in minutes. Includes kit with DVD and soothing sounds—a $40 value! Fee: $55/couple.

Pediatric First Aid Class

This new class, taught by an AHA certified instructor, teaches expectant and new parents how to handle many emergencies that can occur with babies and young children. There is a focus on child safety and prevention, along with specific action plans for when mishaps do happen, as well as how to stock a first-aid kit. Fee: $35 per person.

Infant Massage

Enhance your communication and confidence with your baby. This class is designed for after your baby is born and you will learn:

  • Strokes for a full-body massage that can help relieve colic and gas.
  • New ways to talk and listen to your baby.
  • Relaxation techniques for you and your baby. Fee: $35/couple.

Sibling Class

Join your child as they learn what to expect when the new baby arrives. The class includes fun activities, a learning video, demonstrations, and a tour of a hospital room and the nursery. Class size is limited, so be sure to register early. Children ages 3 through 10 are encouraged to attend with a parent. Fees: $20 first child, $10 each additional.
