Childbirth and Parent Education at HUP
Early Pregnancy Class
Expectant parents are encouraged to take this
class in the first trimester to learn about what
to expect during pregnancy. Topics include proper
nutrition, exercise, tests and screenings, fetal
growth and development, and your changing body.
Please bring a list of your questions and concerns.
Preparation for Childbirth
This comprehensive six-week course is usually
taken in the third trimester of pregnancy. Topics
include labor and delivery, anesthesia, cesarean
sections, breastfeeding, newborn and pediatric
care, and breathing and relaxation techniques.
In addition, tours of the Perinatal Evaluation
Center, and the labor, delivery and maternity
floors are available. Guest speakers include obstetrical
anesthesiologists, pediatricians and breastfeeding
parents. This course is offered on weekday evenings
and on Saturdays.
Sibling Class
Both parents and children can enjoy this special
class, which includes a video, hands-on diaper
experience, a tour of the maternity area and a
discussion of adjusting to a new sibling. Siblings
ages three through ten are encouraged to attend
with a parent.
Parenting Class
We'll help you adjust to your new family
member and offer assistance with issues such as:
- Nutrition and feeding
- Home safety
- Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR)
- Day care
- Dental care
- Sleep disorders
- Play and development
Classes feature guest speakers and rotating topics.
