The Penn Family Planning and Pregnancy Loss Center
A program focused on the reproductive health needs of women through experienced patient care
Family planning options have changed significantly in recent years. With so many choices, patients may be uncertain about which method best suits their needs and lifestyle.
A key role of the obstetrician/gynecologist is to inform patients about the latest in pregnancy prevention and family planning options. An ob/gyn with specialized training in family planning can also serve as a consultant for patients in need of contraception, treatment of a miscarriage or abnormal or undesired pregnancy. In addition, after a pregnancy loss, some women may benefit from pregnancy loss counseling.
The Penn Family Planning & Pregnancy Loss Center is a comprehensive program that strives to provide medical, surgical and emotional reproductive health care to clients while integrating and enhancing family planning training for obstetrics and gynecology residents.
Penn's Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology is committed to providing family planning services that support every person's need to make voluntary and informed decisions about their reproductive health.
Finding the right form of contraception can be challenging, especially for women with complex medical problems like diabetes and heart disease. The Penn Family Planning & Pregnancy Loss Center offers individualized care and attention to each patient.
When appropriate, our providers partner with ob/gyn generalists, specialists and researchers to ensure every patient receives comprehensive evaluation and care. For patients with preexisting health conditions, the program collaborates with other departments including cardiology, oncology, internal medicine and surgery.
The center's services include:
- Contraception counseling for patients with complex medical conditions. Contraception options may include:
- Labor induction
- Medical and surgical management of miscarriage
- Medical and surgical pregnancy termination
- Pregnancy options counseling
- Post-pregnancy loss/abortion counseling and referral
- Sterilization procedures
- Training for medical students and residents
