Vitamin D Builds Strong Bones
Calcium is still the most important ingredient
in fighting osteoporosis,
a condition characterized by brittle bones. But
perhaps you didn't know your body also needs vitamin
D and magnesium to keep your bones strong.
Vitamin D helps your body absorb calcium. Sunlight
triggers your body to produce vitamin D. Enriched
milk is also a good source. If your skin is not
regularly exposed to sunlight or you get less
than three cups of milk a day, consider a supplement,
such as a multi-vitamin or calcium/vitamin D combination.
Be careful not to go to extremes, because too
much vitamin D can be harmful. Check with your
doctor if you have questions.
Magnesium also builds bone strength. To get more
magnesium in your diet, opt for legumes, leafy
vegetables and whole grains. It has not been proved
whether magnesium supplements can help or prevent
osteoporosis.
If you are concerned now about developing osteoporosis
later, remember that adults over the age of 25
should get two to four cups of milk, yogurt, or
calcium-enriched orange juice per day. Don't be
afraid to take a supplement if you fear you aren't
reaching that level naturally.
