Premenstrual Syndrome (PMS)

Research has shown that up to 90% of all women have experienced some of the discomforts of premenstrual syndrome (PMS). Symptoms include breast tenderness, bloating or weight gain, food cravings, mood swings, headaches, irritability, depression and decreased interest in activities.

Fortunately, there are things you can do to combat symptoms:

  • Eat a balanced diet.
  • Avoid salty or sweet foods, which contribute to bloating and mood swings.
  • Exercise three times a week for at least 30 minutes.
  • Quit smoking.
  • Reduce or eliminate use of alcohol.
  • Cut back on caffeine.
  • Eliminate or reduce stress whenever possible.
  • Take an over-the-counter PMS medication. Be sure to follow the directions.

If your symptoms are interfering with your daily life and home treatment is not effective, see your doctor.
