The Philadelphia Crystal Ball and The Million Dollar Challenge

Save the date and join us on April 26, 2007 at the Philadelphia Crystal Ball and Million Dollar Challenge. This annual event is hosted by the Philadelphia Crystal Ball Committee, The Teal Ribbon Ovarian Cancer Research Foundation, and The Canary Foundation to benefit ovarian cancer research.

We ask you to join us on behalf of your mother, wife, sister, daughter, grandaughter, friend or yourself! One in 65 women in the U.S. will develop ovarian cancer. Because the majority of women with ovarian cancer are diagnosed with advanced disease, early detection of ovarian cancer is key.

This event recognizes the need for research in the field of early detection, and finding and funding a cure. It celebrates survivors and their families and friends, and the commitment of our doctors, hospitals and researchers. Penn gynecologic oncologist George Coukos, MD, PhD will be honored for his outstanding research work in the field of ovarian cancer at this event.

Funds raised from the Philadelphia Crystal Ball and Million Dollar Challenge will benefit Ovarian Cancer Research. For more information about contributing, sponsoring or attending this event, please call (856)-874-4444.

Johanna's Law to Launch a National Gynecologic Awareness Campaign

January 12, 2007, President Bush signed Johanna's Law, a landmark legislation that authorizes development of a national gynecologic cancer awareness campaign. The federal campaign intends to educate American women and health professionals about the signs and symptoms of ovarian and other gynecologic cancers.

Johanna's Law, the Gynecologic Cancer Education and Awareness Act authorizes $16.5 million over a three-year period to the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services for the awareness and education campaign. Through education and early detection, Johanna's Law will help women recognize potentially dangerous symptoms and seek appropriate medical attention sooner. The law is named for Johanna Silver Gordon, who died from ovarian cancer in 2000.

The Ovarian Cancer Action Network, an organization that played a major role in the passage of this law, and other advocates still have more work to do. Since Johanna's Law is an authorizing measure, it does not include any appropriations. The Action Network and other advocates will continue to lobby for Congressional funding of the campaign.
