Memory Disorders
Memory disorders such as dementia and Alzheimer’s disease are long-term, usually irreversible condition involving gradual degeneration in brain function. The brain functions affected depend upon the type of dementia. Many dementias involve multiple areas of brain function.
Penn is dedicated to the understanding and treatment of memory disorders via patient care, education and research.
Treatment options are available through the following programs:
Cognitive Neurology Program
This program provides comprehensive assessment and treatment of memory, language, attention, visual and thinking difficulties. These problems can be caused by a wide range of conditions, such as stroke, head trauma, Alzheimer's disease, Parkinson's disease, diabetes, hypertension, dementia, learning disabilities, attention deficit disorder and hydrocephalus.
Penn Memory Center
In addition to the cognitive neurology program, Penn also offers patient care through the Penn Memory Center. Patients in this program are typically enrolled in a clinical trial. The Penn Memory Center includes a multi-disciplinary team of neurologists, geriatric psychiatrists, geriatricians, and social workers, devoted to the evaluation and treatment of dementing illnesses.
