The Gateway to Operating Room nursing is a comprehensive, six month long orientation program that is open to both “new to practice” Nurses as well as RNs who do not have OR experience. During this program, you will learn the fundamental principles of OR nursing through both classroom instruction and clinical experiences.

To be eligible for the Gateway to Operating Room Nursing, you must have a BSN, eligibility for a Pennsylvania RN license and a passion to be a Nurse in the operating room.

Gateway to the Operating Room is a comprehensive program that consists of five weeks of classroom instruction, 30 hours of instruction in a clinical skills lab and 12 to 16 weeks of structured clinical experiences in each of our 12 specialty areas.

Through lectures, discussions, videos, self-learning modules and clinical experience, you will develop these and other core competencies:

  • Pre-operative assessments
  • Basic OR case prep skills
  • Creation and maintenance of sterile fields
  • Scrub and circulate during procedures
  • Complete intra-operative documentation
  • Perform intra-operative scrub and circulating duties
  • Demonstrate correct processing of specimens
  • Correct positioning of patients and equipment
  • Safe care and handling of surgical instruments
  • Safe use of specialty equipment needed for surgery
  • Airway management, anesthesia safety and malignant hyperthermia management
