Mentoring and supporting our “new to practice nurses” at HUP is a tradition and is exemplified in our participation in the UHC/AACN National Nurse Residency Program. We were the first Philadelphia Hospital to participate in, and help mold, the National Nurse Residency Program.

This program is a year-long series of learning and work experiences designed to support nurses as they transition into the role of the professional Nurse.

The goal of the program, based on Patricia Benner's From Novice to Expert, is to assist the graduate nurse's progress from advanced beginner to competent Nurse. This program offers nurses the opportunity for clinical practice in an environment committed to professional growth while emphasizing critical thinking, patient safety, leadership development, evidence-based practice, and interdisciplinary collaboration.

Participating nurses will receive a full salary and an excellent benefits package as well as dedicated preceptors and faculty for guidance and orientation throughout the program.

Criteria for Admission
The criteria for admission is:

  • Graduation from an accredited BSN program within the last 6 months
  • Good references from your school of nursing
  • RN licensure or a temporary practice permit
  • A willingness to commit to the one-year necessary to complete the Residency Program
