Pathology & Laboratory Medicine
As the premiere Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine in the tri-state area, employees have the opportunity to work with a world-class faculty team and gain exposure to the most complex cases in a progressive academic setting. The Department is comprised of a team of dedicated administrative, technical, and professional staff committed to providing top rated support for the University of Pennsylvania Health System. Dynamic and fast-paced, this is a growing teaching hospital laboratory filled with friendly, motivated people who want to give their best.

Anatomic Pathology Division Consists of six Laboratories including Histology and Special Stain, Immunohistochemistry, FISH and Image Analysis, Neuropathology, Electron Microscopy, and Cytopathology. The Division also supports the most comprehensive and active autopsy service in the area and offers unique opportunities for exposure to the newest technologies in the field.

The Anatomic Pathology Division is one of the largest in the area and offers many tests and services not readily available in other hospitals. It serves as a national center for subspecialty expertise in a variety of areas, including GI and endocrine pathology and pigmented lesion dermatopathology. Because approximately 70% of hospital diagnoses are based on Laboratory and Pathology tests, our staff is presented with a unique opportunity to contribute to diagnosis and management of our patients by utilizing technologies that include molecular techniques, immunohistochemistry methods, light and electron microscopy, Fluorescent In-Situ Hybridization (FISH), and Liquid based cytology methods.

Our Laboratory Medicine and Transfusion Medicine Divisions represent one of the most technically advanced clinical labs in the country. In the Laboratory Medicine Service there is a fully automated robotics track system for high volume routine hematology and chemistry testing. The division offers a comprehensive esoteric testing menu in the specialty lab areas of toxicology, humoral immunology, flow cytometry, coagulation, endocrinology and molecular pathology where specimens are submitted from across the country and worldwide.

The clinical microbiology lab is one of the most comprehensive diagnostic labs in the region offering diagnostic testing for infectious diseases caused by bacterial, fungi, viruses and parasites as well as antimicrobial and antifungal susceptibility testing. The tissue typing laboratory, which utilizes serologic, flow cytometry and molecular techniques, provides full lab support for the hospital's multi-organ transplant program.

The Transfusion Medicine Division is one of the largest and most complex in the region. The Transfusion Medicine Service includes a comprehensive immunohematology reference lab, a hematopoietic progenitor collection and processing lab as well as an Apheresis/Infusion Unit. The transfusion service provides over 60,000 units of blood and blood products per year to HUP patients.

The Laboratory is directed by faculty with national and international recognition for expertise in their fields and is staffed with dedicated employees who are highly motivated with a strong commitment to providing excellence in patient care.

The Transfusion Service (Blood Bank) is a critical department in the healthcare field, particularly in hospitals and blood donor centers. Our Transfusion Medicine Division of Pathology and Lab Medicine at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania is a multi-faceted department, covering all areas of transfusion. We dispense many types of blood products for our patients. Blood and blood products are biologic therapeutics and are regulated by the FDA.

It is our job to ensure the products that we dispense are of the highest quality, purity, and potency. The biggest challenge we face in the Blood Bank is finding safe blood for transfusion when serological antibodies are present in the patient. Sometimes this can take many hours or days, especially if the patient has those that react with most donor red blood cells, which are then considered “incompatible” with the patient.

In addition to standard blood banking, we have a state of the art serology laboratory that utilizes both automated and bench antibody identification techniques. We dispense about 75,000 blood products per year. Our employees are at both associate and bachelor college degree level. Working in the blood bank is both an exciting and challenging career choice. We help to save lives every single day!

The Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine at HUP also has a Stem Cell Laboratory, and an Apheresis department, where patients with certain disease states receive specialized care. Patients having surgery in the hospital can donate their own blood in the Apheresis and Donor Center Unit with a doctor's prescription, and after passing a medical screening.

Based on its size and complexity of service offerings, the Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine provides a wide variety of technical opportunities for the motivated individual who is seeking a progressive and collaborative work environment that promotes professional growth and fulfillment.

Radiation Oncology
The leadership of Department of Radiation Oncology is comprised of some of the most renowned professionals in their field. As a national leader in clinical care, research and education, our Radiation Oncology Department is highly respected.

Imaging procedures for treatment planning include X-ray filming and fluoroscopy, and CT linkage with computerized dosimetry. Treatment options include Intensity-Modulated Radiation Therapy (IMRT), Positron Emission Therapy (PET) and Conformal Radiation Therapy. The department has also installed a method for monitoring treatment beam accuracy through TV displays of tumor sites as they are being irradiated.

To continue our leading edge treatments, The Roberts Proton Therapy Center, opening in 2009, will be the largest proton therapy center in the world and one of only six such centers in the country. It will also be the world's most comprehensive proton therapy center, offering the unique ability to fully integrate conventional radiation treatment with proton radiation, which more accurately targets tumors and leaves surrounding, healthy tissue unaffected.

In addition, the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania is one of only a few hospitals in the Philadelphia region to treat cancer patients with the Calypso® 4D Localization System. Utilizing miniature electromagnetic sensors (transponder technology), Calypso® accurately pinpoints a tumor's location prior to a patient's radiation therapy treatments. In the future, HUP anticipates using Calypso® to target tumor sites within other parts of the body, which will significantly decrease damaging healthy tissues that surround the tumor.
