Uterine Artery Embolization (UAE) Program
The Interventional Radiology Division offers
uterine artery embolization (UAE) as an effective
treatment for symptoms due to uterine fibroids.
UAE is a uterus-sparing alternative to hysterectomy,
and has a 90% success rate. UAE offers a shorter
hospital stay, quicker recovery time, and, in
most cases, a reversal of symptoms that can cause
bleeding, pelvic or bulk symptoms associated with
fibroids.
In UAE, a fluoroscopically guided arterial catheter
is used to inject tiny plastic or sponge-like
particles into the blood vessels that feed the
uterine fibroids. Once blood flow to the fibroids
is cut off, they shrink gradually over the next
weeks and months.
Patients who qualify for uterine artery embolization
include premenopausal women suffering from heavy
bleeding or bulk symptoms. The initial diagnosis
is confirmed by magnetic resonance imaging (MRI)
or ultrasound.
The Interventional Radiology Division offers
a comprehensive clinical service including the
latest in magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and
ultrasound scanning. The UAE procedure is performed
in our comfortable, state-of-the-art procedure
suites. We are active in multiple clinical trials
which address long-term outcomes and quality of
life changes following UAE.
