Penn Hospice at Rittenhouse:
Inpatient Hospice Unit

A Division of Wissahickon Hospice, Opening November 2008

While many people with life-limiting illnesses choose to have hospice care in the comfort of their own homes, some hospice patients need hospital-based care. The first of its kind in Center City Philadelphia, Penn Hospice at Rittenhouse is an innovative inpatient hospice unit that will bring quality of life to patients who desire the comfort and care of hospice, but whose needs cannot be met at home.

Currently, patients requiring hospice care are interspersed throughout the health system in acute-care hospital beds. In hospitals, the focus of care is on cure; in a hospice environment, however, patients with life-limiting illnesses no longer seek aggressive treatments, and the focus of care is on quality of life.

Physicians, nurses and other team members at Penn Hospice at Rittenhouse are specially trained in palliative care, which focuses on relieving physical and emotional pain. Counseling and chaplain services are available, and we emphasize family access to patients.

Penn Hospice at Rittenhouse is scheduled to open in November 2008. Backed by the resources of the University of Pennsylvania Health System and staffed by Penn Wissahickon Hospice team members trained in end-of-life care, this state-of-the-art facility will be a premier unit for hospice patients and will provide all aspects of hospice care — physical, emotional and spiritual.
