Local Ironman Runs for David Bradley Children’s Bereavement Program

David Bradley (l) and Jordan Robinson (r)

On June 22, 2008 Newtown, Pennsylvania resident Jordan Robinson will compete in the Ironman Triathlon in Nice, France to raise money for the David Bradley Children's Bereavement Program. The single day, ultra-distance event, which draws amateur and professional athletes from around the globe, consists of a 2.4 mile swim, 112 mile bike race, and a 26.2 mile run.

Although the field of 2,500 racers will be filled with staunch competitors, many participate for personal satisfaction or to fundraise for a specific cause. Robinson has participated in six marathon and triathlon endurance events since 2003 and strives each time to finish, as he puts it, “with a smile on my face and my three children in my arms as I cross the finish line.”

The David Bradley Children's Bereavement Program provides outreach and support for children and teens to help them cope with terminal illness and death-related losses of loved ones. The program was established in 1998 in memory of David Bradley, a young man who received help from Wissahickon Hospice as a child. Bradley lost his father to cancer at the age of 13. During that difficult time, a social worker from Wissahickon Hospice helped him understand his emotions and feelings. As Bradley grew older, this experience instilled in him the need to help other children and teens experiencing similar circumstances.

Unfortunately, Bradley died at the young age of 28. Upon his death, Bradley's mother established the David Bradley Children's Bereavement Program to continue her son's dedicated work.

In addition to Wissahickon Hospice's bereavement services, Bradley found comfort and support with his friends and family. One of those childhood friends was Robinson. Bradley and Robinson attended school together and developed a close relationship.

In honor of Bradley and the compassion he showed others, Jordan will contribute all proceeds raised by his participation in the Ironman France triathlon to the David Bradley Children's Bereavement Program, where all services are provided free of charge to families, and all dollars raised offer individual counseling, community outreach, educational and resource materials, as well as group workshops when requested. Robinson's goal is to raise $10,000.

Thank you for your part in helping Robinson raise $10,000 and for helping the many children who will benefit from the services of the David Bradley Children's Bereavement Program.
