Endoscopy and Other Interventional Diagnostic
and Treatment Procedures
Penn has state-of-the-art facilities for diagnosis
and treatment of gastrointestinal disease, including:
Endoscopic Ultrasound (EUS)
Physicians at Penn have pioneered the most accurate
detection and treatment of the myriad diseases
within the human digestive tract, especially
digestive cancer. At Penn, specialized techniques
such as endoscopic ultrasound (EUS) are important
tools in the diagnosis and treatment of gastrointestinal
tumors.
The Right Diagnosis
EUS is critical to the multidisciplinary management
of digestive cancer, a category that includes pancreatic
cancer, bile
duct cancer and esophageal
cancer. Because of its unique capability
to allow physicians to get extremely close
to the abdominal organs, more accurate and
detailed images are obtained.
EUS combines the flexibility of an endoscope (via
a long tube inserted in the mouth or the rectum)
with the high resolution imaging of ultrasound to
produce images of unmatched quality.
This degree of access also allows gastroenterologists
to use fine-needle aspiration for obtaining tissue
and fluid samples in suspicious tumors or lymph
nodes, even those smaller than 5mm. This advancement
is invaluable in determining whether surgery
is necessary and can help patients get answers
faster.

A Critical Team
“Established in 1993, Penn's EUS program has grown to be one of the largest
volume programs in the country,” according to Michael
L. Kochman, MD, FACP, Co-director of Gastrointestinal Oncology and Endoscopy
Training Director. It's also the largest and most experienced group of
gastroenterologists and gastrointestinal surgeons in the area providing comprehensive
care of the digestive tract.
Combining a highly experienced team using the
most advanced minimally invasive tools, with
the resources available at the Abramson
Cancer Center of the University of Pennsylvania,
can make all the difference in providing exceptional
care. Which is why, when it comes to digestive
cancer, where you turn first matters most.
