It should be noted, that overall, pregnancy rates
are decreased and miscarriage rates are markedly
increased in women over the age of 40. This decrease
in success is even more dramatic in women over
the age of 42.
At Penn Fertility Care, we believe that even
women over age 42 with normal ovarian reserve
(as indicted by a normal day 3-5 FSH) should be
given the opportunity to undergo an IVF cycle.
However, our own statistics since 1996 show that
all women over 40 with borderline or elevated
FSH who underwent an IVF cycle were either cancelled
for poor response or did not deliver a baby. These
patients either failed to achieve a pregnancy
following embryo transfer or they had a miscarriage.
The best options for this sub-group of patients
are egg or embryo donation or adoption.
