Penn Neurosurgery is pleased to announce that William C. Welch, MD, FACS, FICS has joined the department of neurosurgery as professor and chief of neurosurgery at Pennsylvania Hospital.

Dr. Welch has particular expertise in neurosurgical procedures of the spine. His research includes designing and testing spinal implants, and basic science applications of cellular regeneration for spinal use.

Dr. Welch received his medical degree from the State University of New York School of Medicine. He completed his internship and neurosurgical residency at the University of Rochester-Strong Memorial Hospital in Rochester, NY, a fellowship in neuro-oncology at Montefiore Medical Center, and a fellowship in spinal surgery at Weiler Hospital-Albert Einstein College of Medicine in the Bronx. He is an internationally recognized lecturer and author in the area of spinal disorders.

He previously served as chief of neurosurgery and director of Neurological Spine Services at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center-Presbyterian.
