Are You Prepared for Flu Season?

Flu season is quickly approaching. With over 200,000 people hospitalized from influenza each year, it is important to begin thinking about receiving an influenza shot to lower your chance of getting sick this flu season.

Here are some helpful hints about the flu, the vaccine and who should be vaccinated:

  • Flu season can start as early as October, so October and November are the best months to get your flu shot.
  • High-risk individuals should get their flu vaccination as early as possible. High-risk individuals include:
    • people over age 50
    • anyone with cardiovascular disease
    • those who need regular medical care due to metabolic disease or a weakened immune system
    • women who are or will become pregnant during flu season
    • all children between the ages 6 months and 5 years
  • There are two types of vaccinations: a live vaccine given as a nasal spray and an injection (shot).
  • Talk to your doctor about your medical history so he/she can determine which vaccination is right for you.
