About the Department of Dermatology

The Department of Dermatology was founded in 1874 by Dr. Louis Adolphus Duhring (1845–1913). It is the nation’s first Department of Dermatology. Dr. Duhring’s vision and support were the initial impetus that allowed the Department to grow to its present world-renowned stature. Since its inception it has been a leader in clinical and basic science research in dermatology.

In the last eight years the Department has consistently been among the top five dermatology departments in the country in National Institutes of Health Research funding. In each of the last five years it has been ranked in either the number one or two positions.

The Department has outpatient practices at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania and Penn Medicine at Radnor. These practices also include Centers of Excellence that provide tertiary care in a large number of sub-specialty areas.

Whether in Critical Care or Cosmetic Dermatology, we are recognized nationally and internationally for providing the highest quality of care. Our consultative and inpatient services are an integral part of the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania’s multi-disciplinary approach to advanced care in medicine.
