Heart Failure and Transplantation Program
More than 8,000 patient visits annually
to the Penn Heart Failure and Transplantation
Program since 2000.
Heart failure patients throughout the region
are drawn to Penn's Heart Failure and Transplantation
Program by its multidisciplinary team of cardiologists,
cardiovascular surgeons, nurses, transplant and
VAD coordinators, social workers, and specialists
in cardiac imaging, arrhythmia management, cardiac
anesthesia, infectious disease, immunology and
rehabilitation medicine – all of whom are
dedicated to the management of patients with
complex heart failure.
Comprehensive Care for Heart Failure Patients
The Heart Failure and Transplantation Program
at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania
has developed a multidisciplinary algorithm
for heart failure management that reflects
the chronic, progressive nature of the disease.
The management of Stage A and B heart failure
at Penn is focused upon the early identification
and control of risk factors for patients with
coronary heart disease, hypertension, diabetes
and other conditions predisposing to heart failure.
Patients with Stage C heart disease are candidates
for innovative surgical interventions and implanted
cardiac devices.
Patients in Stage D heart failure are offered
a full spectrum of care that combines medical
management, ventricular assist devices (VADs),
and for selected patients, heart transplantation.
