Minimally Invasive Vein Harvesting Program

If you require bypass surgery or are in need of venous conduits, you can often avoid extra surgery by undergoing a minimally invasive harvesting of the saphenous vein. The procedure, which is safe and effective for select patients, is less painful and offers a quicker recovery than traditional vein harvesting surgery.

Minimally invasive vein harvesting is one of the many techniques our surgeons are using to decrease the morbidity of cardiac surgery. Unfortunately, not every patient is a candidate for this procedure. Patients who will not benefit from minimally invasive harvesting of the saphenous vein can have:

  • a history of varicose veins
  • small or thin legs
  • a superficial saphenous vein

Patients who are not candidates for saphenous vein harvesting may be candidates for arterial conduits for bypass grafting.

Be sure to speak to your Penn Cardiac Care physician to see if you are a candidate for this type of procedure.
