Transdisiplinary Tobacco Research Use Center

Are you ready to kick the habit? If so, you may be eligible to participate in a new research study aimed at helping people who want to stop smoking.

What is Quit for Health?

Quit for Health is a clinical research program funded by the National Institutes of Health (NIH) Quit for Health's unique approach combines nicotine replacement therapy with group behavioral counseling, a proven method for helping people quit smoking. All Quit for Health participants receive study medication and counseling at no cost and are compensated for their time and travel. Since 1998, over 600 smokers have participated in the Quit for Health program at the University of Pennsylvania. Of those smokers, almost half quit smoking at the end of treatment, and over 25% were able to remain quit..

Volunteers who want to quit smoking are needed for research on nicotine addiction and smoking cessation.

This research will help us understand which forms of stop-smoking treatments are best suited for different individuals.

Why is quitting important?

By quitting smoking now you can:

  • Lower your chance of developing heart disease, emphysema, lung cancer and other serious smoking-related health problems
  • Help you and your children breathe easier
  • Increase your overall energy level
  • Rid yourself of the expense, burden and inconvenience of the smoking habit

While you must first decide to kick the habit, choosing the right program is the next important step.

Quit for Health can help you achieve your goal.

How does Quit for Health work?

This program deals with many aspects of smoking, including nicotine addiction and the daily habit.

Participants will attend professional smoking-cessation group counseling sessions and receive stop-smoking medication. All services provided in the study are free of charge.

If you choose to participate, you will:

  • Have a simple medical exam
  • Complete questionnaires about your background and smoking habit
  • Complete three brief telephone surveys during the year after treatment ends

Interested in quitting today? If you are 18 and older and interested in participating, please call 1-877-513-QUIT or e-mail us at q4health@mail.med.upenn.edu and leave your name, telephone number and best time to be reached. A staff member will contact you with additional information.

Visit the Transdisciplinary Tobacco Research Center research web site for more information, including a list of smoking cessation programs throughout the Philadelphia region.

"I tried to quit smoking many times in the past but this is the first time I've been successful," said one Quit for Health participant from Philadelphia.
