Unit for Experimental Psychiatry:
Division of Sleep and Chronobiology
The Unit for Experimental Psychiatry in the Department of Psychiatry, University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine, is recruiting individuals interested in participation in sleep and sleep deprivation research studies.
We investigate the effects of sleep deprivation
and shortened sleep on performance measures,
including reaction time and memory function.
In addition, we study the effects of sleep loss
on the way brain activity (EEG) appears as it “catches up” on lost sleep, and we measure several other body and brain functions that may be affected by sleep deprivation.
The research currently performed by the Unit
is supported by grants from the National Institutes
of Health, the National Space Biomedical Research
Institute, the Air Force Office of Scientific
Research, the Department of Transportation, and
several other agencies.
Participants must be between 22 to 45 years of age, non-smokers, physically and mentally healthy, and have stable sleep patterns. Participants are also required to undergo a brief telephone screening and 1 to 4 laboratory evaluations in order to determine eligibility for the study.
If qualified, participation would involve between
1 and 16 days in our research facility, depending
on the particular research study. Remuneration
is dependent upon the time commitment.
