Treatment
Research Center
The Treatment
Research Center (TRC) is an outpatient addiction
treatment and research facility which is funded by
federal grants and pharmaceutical contracts. The
scientists, clinicians and research
staff that operate the TRC and provide its medical
treatments are primarily members of the Treatment
Research Division (TRD),
a division of the Center
for Studies of Addiction.
The treatment provided at the TRC includes psychotherapeutic
approaches
and
the
use
of medications
for detoxification,
craving reduction and relapse prevention. The primary
design in each of the treatment research protocols
of investigative medications includes a double-blind,
placebo controlled trial coupled with a psychotherapeutic
intervention that typically spans from 3 to 9 months
of treatment.
TRD investigators evaluate
the effectiveness of new approaches to treating addictions
namely,
cocaine, nicotine, alcohol, cannabis and opiate dependence.
The TRD uses a multidisciplinary approach to address
patient’s
biopsychosocial needs. Central to this effort is an
evaluation of the physiological and subjective patient
responses to treatment as well as developing biological
and genetically based models for studying addiction.
Approximately 10-15 protocols
are ongoing at any given time. For calendar year
2005, the TRD staff provided information to 2,911
individuals, usually over the telephone. 843 patients
were screened at the TRC and 408
patients agreed participated in
a treatment study, resulting in approximately
11,000 patient visits (see Treatment
Research Division Current Studies). There are several
major core functions that are essential in providing
the
infrastructure
at the TRC, without which these trials could not be
supported. These functions are: Outpatient detoxification,
subject
recruitment, intake (phone screen, medical exam, psychosocial
interview), pharmacy/lab (including Urine Drug Screens),
psychosocial treatment, supervision and monitoring,
data management/analyses (including computer support),
and local administrative support (budget, staffing,
secretarial, IRB documentation).
