Arriving at the Hospital
The following information details what a
patient can expect upon arrival at the
hospital on the day of surgery.
- If the patient uses a device (CPAP, BiPAP)
for sleep apnea, they are to bring it to
the hospital on the day of surgery.
- Upon arrival at the hospital, the patient
will go to the admissions area. This is located
on the first floor of the Cupp Building.
Family and friends may stay with the patient
at this time.
- After being admitted, the patient will be
taken to the short procedure unit. Family
may accompany the patient to this area.
- When the patient’s name is called,
a nurse will take him or her to get ready
for surgery. Family may stay with the patient
at this time.
- The patient will change into a hospital
gown and belongings will be kept here until
after the surgery is completed and that patient
arrives in your hospital room.
- The patient will then be escorted to the
preoperative holding area. At this time,
the patient’s family will go to the Surgical
Family Waiting Room on the 2nd floor of
the Cupp Building.
- In the preoperative holding area, the patient
will have an IV line placed in his or her arm.
- The nurse will ask the patient some routine
preoperative questions.
- The patient will meet with the anesthesiologist.
- The patient is then given a dose of a low
dose anticoagulant. This medicine is used
as an intervention to help prevent blood clot
formation. The patient is also given a dose
of antibiotic. This is given as a preventative
measure as well.
- The patient is then taken to
surgery on a bed or stretcher.
