Key Recovery Points

- Ambulation – It is important
to move around within three hours after returning
to your room. The nurse will assist you in the
beginning. Over time you will be able to do
this independently. It is important to get up
and walk about at least three times daily. Physical
therapy will work with you after surgery. This
activity is very important for your recovery.
- Diet:
- You will not be allowed to drink or eat
anything until the naso gastric tube is
removed. This tube is removed on the second
day after surgery.
- On the second day after surgery you will
be given sips of liquid (water, broth, tea).
- On the third day after surgery you will
be given a tray of liquid. In the hospital
you are allowed to have water, broth, tea,
and sugar free Jello. It is very important
to drink only 30cc of liquid at a time every
15 minutes. Stop if you feel bloated or
full.
- Incentive Spirometer – This is
a device that helps your lungs to expand after
surgery. Your nurses will show you how to use
it once you wake up. It is recommended to do
at least 10 deep breaths/hour.
