Program Overview

The staff works together as a teamThe Bariatric Surgery Program at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania offers comprehensive medical care for morbidly obese patients before and after surgery. The expertise of professionals in psychology, nutrition, medicine, nursing and surgery are the core components of the program. The Penn Bariatric Surgery team works together to provide the patient with the best medical care, while achieving lifestyle and weight loss goals.

I've lost about 176 poundsMorbid obesity significantly reduces life span and is associated with obesity-related health conditions such as high blood pressure, high cholesterol and diabetes. There is conclusive evidence that obesity has detrimental effects on both health and longevity, and therefore surgery should not be considered solely for an improvement in physical appearance. Surgical treatment offers the best hope for the morbidly obese, since diets, behavioral and drug therapies have been proven highly unsuccessful for these patients.
