Arriving at the Hospital
Below you will find information on what to expect
when you arrive at the hospital on the day of
surgery.
- When you arrive at the hospital you go to
the admissions center. This is located on Silverstein
1. Your family and friends may stay with you
at this time.
- From there you will be taken to the pre-operative
area. Your family may accompany you to this
area.
- When your name is called, a nurse will take
you to get ready for surgery. At this time your
family should go to the Surgical Family Waiting
area on Dulles 2.
- You will change into a hospital gown.
- You will have an IV line placed in your arm
- The nurse will ask you some routine pre-operative
questions.
- You will meet with the anesthesiologist.
- You will be given a dose of a low dose anticoagulant
(Heparin). This medicine is one intervention
to help prevent blood clot formation. You will
also be given a dose of antibiotic. This is
given as a preventative measure.
- You will be taken to surgery in your bed.
