Arriving at the Hospital

Below you will find information on what to expect when you arrive at the hospital on the day of surgery.

  • When you arrive at the hospital you go to the admissions center. This is located on Silverstein 1. Your family and friends may stay with you at this time.
  • From there you will be taken to the pre-operative area. Your family may accompany you to this area.
  • When your name is called, a nurse will take you to get ready for surgery. At this time your family should go to the Surgical Family Waiting area on Dulles 2.
  • You will change into a hospital gown.
  • You will have an IV line placed in your arm
  • The nurse will ask you some routine pre-operative questions.
  • You will meet with the anesthesiologist.
  • You will be given a dose of a low dose anticoagulant (Heparin). This medicine is one intervention to help prevent blood clot formation. You will also be given a dose of antibiotic. This is given as a preventative measure.
  • You will be taken to surgery in your bed.
